I mildly obsessed with trees these days, I know, but I feel it is justified. Where I grew up--in the desert more commonly known as Southern California--there were no seasons. True, the so-called summer months were hot and the so-called winter months were..."cold"...but those four season titles have no real meaning where Southern California is concerned. As far as I can tell, the seasons are:

• Spring (February to April),


• Summer (April to September)


• Summer-with-a-Head-Cold (September to December), and


• Overcast (December to February).

For the trees, this means (respectively):

• Bright Green and Leafy,


• Pale Green and Leafy,


• Sickly Green and Leafy, and


• Oops-I-Dropped-My-Leaves.

I do hope this explains my fascination with seasons that change, and the leaves that change with them. I learned about the cycle of seasons as a young child--something about needing different sorts of clothing for different times of the year, above and beyond the need to finally change out of flip-flops in December and into a some sort of footwear requiring (gasp!) socks until February--but it has taken about two decades for it to finally make sense.

When winter comes, I promise that the trees will seem less fascinating and the snow much more so. Making snow angels in the snow is so much cooler than making snow angels in the sand. I mean, dude, it was such a bummer when the waves, like, totally washed them away, you know?

(It is at this point, I imagine, that everyone who grew up in cold climate is just about ready to introduce me to the pain of the ice-packed snowball, so I will cease with the commentary and move on to the photography.)
