Pedantry Digest

First things first, my lunch/dinner tonight (whatever the name is for the second meal of the day eaten at 6:00 PM): poached eggs (my first time making them!) over cooked baby spinach with a side of roasted potatoes, accompanied by good friends Sea Salt, Black Pepper, and Tabasco. Verdict: Tasty to the nth degree, where n rapidly approached infinity. (That's right, folks: Food, photography, and calculus. It's enough to make you salivate and lose your appetite, all in one sentence.)




John P. Robarts Research Library: The sign on the door for the Computing in the Humanities and Social Science graduate student lab (CHASS; for a group that contains some of the most well-educated people in the humanities and social sciences, that's a real stretch as acronyms go). I realise that 'TACT' may be just another acronym (well done, guys, really), but it makes for one hell of a poster. I hope 'TACT' is compatible with a variety of operating systems--I know at least a handful of people who could use an installation. Or two.

(Side note for one of my favourite quotations, compliments of Sir Isaac Newton: Tact is the knack of making a point without making an enemy.)

For those unfamiliar with some of the stranger expressions in photography, there exists a term known as 'shooting from the hip' which somewhat accurately describes what it means. Essentially, it describes the act of taking photos while not looking through the viewfinder so as to gain a somewhat different perspective. I've often used this method as a supplement to my height by holding my camera over tall fences. (Other times this does, indeed, take the shape of holding the camera at one's hip, hence the name.)

These next two photographs are examples of this method. While sitting at the aforementioned Starbucks, I stealthily held my little camera on my knee and took pictures of the legs of the man at the adjacent table. (For whatever my small digital camera lacks in photographic control, it makes up for in size and surreptitiousness, when compared to my other camera.) I don't know what it is, but I really like these images a lot.
