Pedantry Digest

(For those who missed it, Friday's photos have now been posted, however late.)

This weekend was host to Doors Open Toronto, a sort of festival of notable architecture and Toronto culture. I joined my lovely new housemate, Cheryl, her boyfriend, Jason, and their friend, Sian, on a walk around the city to see a few of the more than 140 sites.

The first stop was the Empire Sandy, a 'tall ship' at home on the Harbourfront, near Spadina Avenue.

Wow, the CN Tower! I bet no one has ever taken a picture of the CN Tower before! (Actually, I do like how this looks very 1960's-ish on account of some simple colouring changes.)




At the Metropolitan Toronto Convention Centre. Cheryl looking out the window (Jason and Sian can be seen in the reflection).




Same location as the previous image. This has got to be one of the best EXIT signs I've ever seen. Never before have I found a sign for a fire escape that actually shows a person on fire, running. I know it's probably supposed to look like the flames are just close behind him and that he's running away, but it seems to me that he is, in fact, running so fast that the flames are flying off him a bit, like a superhero's cape. A+ to whoever designed this one.




The final stop was Nathan Philips Square, home to City Hall, among other things. The big deal here was that one of the lower roofs was open to the public. It's probably not more than five storeys high, but it hosts a surprisingly nice view.

Looking out west to the Canada Life building. I'm amused that, in spite of the rest of the picture being of the black-and-neon colour scheme, the Canadian flag waving around in the sky is a plain red (as is its true colour).




Finally, my favourite series in a little while. Looking straight down at people walking across a fully concrete part of the Square. I especially like the last picture--it's very lonely (well, the whole series has a somewhat barren and desperate feeling to it, I feel, but that last one particularly emphasises it).
