Today was the Bubble Battle at Old City Hall in Toronto, set up by the brilliant folks at newmindspace. (In fact, it was hosted in six places across North America at 3:00 PM, local time.) It's the sort of event I wish I could say that I thought up myself.

Still, I managed to take more than a few pictures. Here are the best of the digital photos (the 35mm photos will be developed, and possibly posted, soon).

This cute little guy was out to try everyone's bubble contraptions. He didn't say much, but he seemed to be having a good time.

One of the few posed shots from today (taken by request of the nice man in the goldenrod t-shirt).

Casen tries his best to get some bubbles out of this apparatus. Mike (in the blue t-shirt), owner of the apparatus, looks on in the hopes that, maybe this time, something will come out. Nothing did.

Elana, on the other hand, is incredibly skilled.

Oh, yes, she's a bubble-making machine.

Beautiful bubbles floating along the cool breeze on a very hot Toronto afternoon.

By far one of my favourite pictures from today. (There are two other shots of these two, but this is the best one.)

More of the cute kid. He, too, had some trouble with this giant wand, but I managed to teach him how to use my bubble gun and he seemed to enjoy that.

I had brought two cameras today (a digital and a manual, accounting for 49 and 36 shots, respectively), but I definitely wasn't the only one.

Bubbles: More fun than a barrel of monkeys. And cleaner, too.

Comments:
That looks like so much fun! Even more reason to choose Toronto over London for grad school.

Well, the schools on the potential graduate school list right now are Toronto (OISE), London (UCL), Cambridge, and Sussex. If I end up staying in Toronto, I have no complaints--it's a great city and I already have friends here. But if I end up in England, I'll just have to start my own bubble battles...

We might be in London together! Cambridge is crap (the people) except for the team of researchers who bring me "Meerkat Manor" every week.

And I was talking about MY choices for grad school! I'm not that psychic!

The only thing holding me back from going abroad for grad school is leaving my 87 year old grammy. We are so close...it would really hurt her if I left. What would you do?

P.S. Toronto has Sonja Arntzen, but London has a great great great program for Japanese Literature! Maybe I should just go abroad...

Oh, geez, there's absolutely no way I can answer that, or even know what I'd do in the 'same' situation. My parents sent me off either travelling or to summer camps since I was about 8 and I've been living in another country from them since I started university at 17--they have always allowed me to just run off and explore (I'm ridiculously lucky, I know)--so I'm guessing that I come from a completely different background. My thought process and the contributing factors to my decision would not be even remotely the same.

What about Japan for Japanese literature? I'm a big proponent of immersing yourself in a culture if you want to study anything about it (e.g., I don't even understand why U of T has an American Studies program). At best, I think studying it from outside the culture opens you up to the criticism that surrounds it--a very good thing, indeed. But, for me, art is about being there, in every sense--you can find excellent criticism in a book, if you need it.

*steps down off soapbox*
